"When there is a crisis in the church it is always here: a crisis in contemplation."

-- Carlo Carretto

Leaders for this retreat-style conference will journey with you through the week, providing one-on-one spiritual direction as requested, offering contemplative morning and evening prayer and guiding relaxed table discussions over lunch.

River View Retreat, June 4 - 8, 2018

Leadership Team: Jeff Savage, Karen Gygax Rodriguez, Joyce Reed

and Brad Berglund

Jeff has been a pastor for over thirty years and has served the First Baptist Church of Springfield, Oregon, since 1988. A strong advocate for life together, Jeff says, “This has been my faith community for the past three decades, and many of these brothers and sisters have taught me much about the rhythms of the spiritual life.” In addition to earning a BA in history and a Master of Divinity degree, Jeff’s Doctor of Ministry degree centered on spiritual formation and leadership. A spiritual director trained in the Franciscan tradition and a retreat leader with a focus on contemplative practices, Jeff and his wife, Janet, also offer retreat space for clergy colleagues at their home above the McKenzie River at Vida, Oregon. When home, Jeff finds balance in gardening, watching the sunrise, wandering, and being “Pop Pop” to four wonderful grandchildren (photos supplied on request). Rev. Karen Gygax Rodriguez  has been a pastor for 29 years.  Throughout her ministry Karen has always valued the shared spiritual journey.  Karen has done extensive work with Parker Palmer’s Center for Courage and Renewal, the practices of Circles of Trust and learning to ask open, honest questions, which seek to create the atmosphere for a person’s soul and inner knowledge to surface as a resource for that person. Through the presence of the Holy Spirit in each one of our lives, we have the potential to search within to hear and know God’s voice.  Along with her ministry, currently she is working with the Transforming Center and Ruth Haley Barton as part of the Transforming Community Quarterly Retreats 13. Karen’s primary work as a spiritual director has been to her congregation, and the gathered community of Green Lake.

A classical guitarist, a spiritual director, an ordained American Baptist minister, and an adjunct seminary professor, Brad Berglund works ecumenically leading retreats and pilgrimage experiences around the world. The author of two best-selling books on the topic of worship renewal, Reinventing Sunday and Reinventing Worship, Brad is an internationally recognized worship designer and leader. When he is at home in Denver, Brad can be found leading an ecumenical contemplative worship experience called “The Threshold.” Visit Brad at: www.illuminatedjourneys.com and www.thethreshold.us

Joyce, with her husband David Reed, is an American Baptist Regional Missionary to Ibero-America & the Caribbean in the area of Spiritual Formation & Renewal.  She co-teaches spiritual formation in Spanish through an on-line Masters of Theology program with Palmer Theological Seminary, offering spiritual guidance for Latino/a church leaders. Joyce has been a pastor for 28 years and a missionary for 19 years. She completed her Spiritual Direction training with Shalem Institute in 2016. Joyce shares, “During the last four years I have navigated a significant health crisis, the death of my father, the loss of my mother’s home to fire, a vocational shift, three geographical moves, and the marriage of my youngest son.  I am learning what it means to surrender to holy mystery, to become resilient with loss, and to brave the wilderness of my authentic self.  The invitation to sit in silence and invite my heart to simply BE in God’s presence has transformed who I am, and who I am becoming.  My hope and desire is to create safe, sacred spaces where I can companion others to discern the Spirit’s voice and experience renewal with God.”
