"When there is a crisis in the church it is always here: a crisis in contemplation."

-- Carlo Carretto

Jeff has been a pastor for over thirty years and has served the First Baptist Church of Springfield, Oregon, since 1988. A strong advocate for life together, Jeff says, “This has been my faith community for the past three decades, and many of these brothers and sisters have taught me much about the rhythms of the spiritual life.” In addition to earning a BA in history and a Master of Divinity degree, Jeff’s Doctor of Ministry degree centered on spiritual formation and leadership. A spiritual director trained in the Franciscan tradition and a retreat leader with a focus on contemplative practices, Jeff and his wife, Janet, also offer retreat space for clergy colleagues at their home above the McKenzie River at Vida, Oregon. When home, Jeff finds balance in gardening, watching the sunrise, wandering, and being “Pop Pop” to four wonderful grandchildren (photos supplied on request). Look at a bedside table and learn about someone.  So, let’s look at Judy

Fackenthal’s bedside.  A stack of books resides there; at least one fiction, one spirituality, usually something about self-examination, and a journal for taking daily note of gratitude and God’s presence (her Bible is on her iPad).  A pile of rocks from around the world, some marked with names to hold in prayer, others serving as reminders of beauty and grace in the world.  A candle for focus during contemplative prayer in the morning.  Small post-it notes with significant quotes for awareness of the Holy.  In other words, her beside table is her sacred place to encounter God.  The practices there prepare Judy for her day as wife, mother (and in-law), pastor, spiritual director, mentor, daughter, sister, ABCUSA past-president, and friend.   Judy and her husband, Fred, live in the heart of Indianapolis where she has been pastor of Garfield Park Baptist Church since 1999.  She received her Master of Divinity from Christian Theological Seminary and has served American Baptists in many ways over the years.  Participating in Rhythms of the Spirit provides space for Judy’s soul to go deep with Christ while walking alongside others with the same desire.
